The footpaths outside the National Concert Hall are very difficult for people with disabilities. I use a rollator (walking aid on wheels) and find the footpaths are full of bumps. There are no slopes on the edges and this would make use by a wheelchair even more difficult. Many disabled people like to to to the Concert Hall and unless you go by car (parking is very limited) the approach from either side is difficult.

Hi Dorothy, Please see reply from Road maintenance section:
The footpaths outside the NCH are made up of antique granite flagstones. These are a protected structure and subject to a very stringent controls about how they are laid. Since these flagstones are so old, they vary considerably in size and shape and it is very hard to achieve a unified surface such as would normally be achieved with modern materials. Since the flagstones are protected, we are not permitted to remove them and use a different material to achieve a better surface. Therefore, the only way to improve the current alignment would be to completely reconstruct the footpath. The footpath along the NCH is very large and we do not currently have the resources to carry out full scale reconstruction on it. I will, however, have the kerbs reconstructed to modern accessibility standards at the two footpath crossovers where they are not currently dished. The complainant mentions these areas (“There are no slopes on the edges”) so reinstating them will make the area much more accessible.
Kind regards Ann Marie. Access Unit.
