Housing Assistance Payment (HAP)

Housing Assistance payment (HAP) is a new social housing support which will ultimately replace Rent Supplement for those with a long term housing need. To be eligible for HAP you must be a qualified housing applicant.

How it Works

  • You must find your own private rented accommodation (within specific rent caps)
  • Your Local Authority will pay your landlord directly and the tenant will pay their rent contribution to the Local Authority based on the differential rent scheme
  • The agreement is entirely between the tenant and the Landlord the Local Authority only processes the rent amount

Benefits of HAP

  • Allows recipients to take up full time employment while still receiving housing support
  • Allows recipients to select housing in their area of choice
  • Properties will be inspected to insure they meet the required standards
  • All payments will be made electronically
  • The landlord will receive prompt payments directly from the Local Authority on a monthly basis subject to the HAP tenant paying the Local Authority
