Apply for a Council Home

Dublin City Council provides accommodation to people whose need for accommodation has been established.

To apply for council accommodation, you must first apply to go on the ‘Housing List’. This list determines the sequence in which accommodation is provided to people.

Add yourself to the housing list

To apply for housing follow these steps:

Step 1

Complete the application form

Complete the following form and return it with the correct supporting documentation to us at the address below.

Download the Housing Application form and Housing HPL1 form

Or contact us at the address below to request a copy.

Before you send us the form, make you sure you meet these criteria:

  • You are 18 years of age or over.
  • You need housing.
  • You are unable to provide accommodation from your own resources.
  • If you are single, your income must not exceed €35,000 net in the previous year.
  • If you are a couple, your combined income must not exceed €36,750 net in the previous year.

Step 2

We will review your application

We will assess your application and determine if you qualify to be added to the list.

A Council Official will call and inspect your current accommodation.

Following this we will contact you to inform you of the status of your application.

Step 3

You are placed on the Housing List

If you are eligible you will be placed on the housing list according to a points system.

This points system determines the sequence in which you will be offered accommodation.

Applicants may, sometimes, in serious medical or difficult living circumstances be considered on a priority basis and included on the list without points. Learn how to move out of exceptionally difficult living circumstances.

Step 4

We will offer you accommodation

When you have been reached for an offer of accommodation in your area of choice we will contact you.

Sell your house and join the Housing List for Older Persons

If you are 55 years of age or older and live in Dublin City, you may offer your house for sale to the City Council and apply for accommodation under the Financial Contribution Scheme.

Further information on this scheme can be found at our “Sell your Home to the Council” pages or contact us at the address below.
