If you are over 55, you can move into a Sheltered Housing Scheme by selling your current home to the Dublin City Council. In effect, you are swapping your current home for a home in a Sheltered Housing Scheme.
Find out below how to sell your home to us.
Advantages of Sheltered Housing for an Older Person
A Sheltered Housing Scheme is a place where older people live close together. You might sell your home and move into sheltered accommodation for the following reasons:
- Your house may be too big for you on your own, e.g. if your family has moved out.
- Sheltered accommodation is specially designed for older people, e.g. it has fewer stairs and easier to use furniture.
- No need to worry about maintenance, because these homes are maintained by Dublin City Council.
- It could be more sociable to live in a community of other retired people.
- It could be better for you to live in a community of people that has similar needs to you.
Note: If you sell your house to us and move into sheltered accommodation, you have to pay us some money to cover the costs of your new home. Find out how much you have to pay below.

Step 4: We will contact you
If we are interested in your property, we will contact you to arrange an appointment to meet you. We will also arrange for an inspector to view your house to check its condition.
Step 5: You sell your house to us
If everything goes smoothly, we will then buy your home at an agreed price.
If we decide not to buy your home, you can then sell it on the open market. However, if you do sell your house privately, we cannot guarantee that you will get a place in sheltered accommodation by the time you sell it.
Step 6: Move into sheltered accommodation
If we buy your house, we will arrange for you to move into sheltered accommodation. When this happens, you will have to pay a contribution towards the cost of your new home, as follows:
- If you are 55 to 69 years old: 33% of the sale price of your home.
- If you are 70 to 79 years old: 25% of the sale price of your home.
- If you are 80 years old or over: 20% of the sale price of your home.
Until a place is found, you can continue to stay in your own home.
