International Biodiversity Day Friday May 22nd

To celebrate International Biodiversity Day Dublin City Council is hosting a week long biodiversity programme of free wildlife events encouraging people to explore Dublin’s local wildlife, flora and fauna from 19th – 23rd May 2009.


Events include bird walks, film screenings, photographic competition/exhibition and wildlife talks. All events are free. Bring along the family.

Biodiversity Week Event Schedule


Wednesday, May 20th: Bird Walk: 7pm. Griffith Park, Drumcondra.  Lead by Eric Dempsey of Mooney Goes Wild.  At this time of year we should be able to enjoy seeing and hearing the many species of bird that use the River Tolka for feeding and live in the many trees along its banks.  Meet at 7pm at Griffith Park at the Botanic Avenue entrance which is closest to St. Mobhi Road. 


Thursday, May 21st and Friday, May 22nd: Display of entries to ‘Wildlife of Dublin City’ photographic competition.  Exhibition in the Civic Offices (Fishamble Street Entrance), Dublin 8.

 

Friday, May 22nd: 10.30 a.m.-11.30 a.m.  Irish Film Institute, Temple Bar. Screening of film ‘Bay of Birds’ from Eamon De Buitléir’s wildlife series ‘Wild Islands’.  Mr. De Buitléir to introduce the film in person.

 

Friday, May 22nd: 11.30 a.m. – 1.00 p.m.  Irish Film Institute, Temple Bar. ‘Summer in the City-Birdlife of Dublin’ talk by Eric Dempsey (RTE 1 Mooney Goes Wild reporter). Followed by walk around Temple Bar with Eric in search of its avian residents.

Saturday, May 23rd: Global Action Plan: Ballymun in conjunction with DCC is hosting a youth biodiversity workshop including insect identification and creepy crawly hands-on experience and field trips to local DCC Ballymun Public Parks.  See http://www.tidytowns.ie/newsItem.php?id=197  for details .
