Dublin City Council's Northside Music Festival 2009

Dublin City Council's Arts Office is delighted to present the 3rd year of the Northside Music Festival. The festival offers a programme of free diverse music events across the north of the city both indoors and outdoors. This year the festival will run from the 21st July to 16th August and will feature a wealth of Irish and International talent. Many of the venues are unique in that they do not usually host professional musicians such as St. Pappan's Church, Santry, Carleton Hall, Marino, Sean O'Casey Community Centre, East Wall along with Dublin city parks and civic spaces.

This year's Northside Music Festival will also feature a workshop programme for young people in association with the Big Bang Festival.

The festival is part of Dublin City Council's Arts office extended arts service to city communities. There really is something for everyone with a range of musical talent across a range of musical cultures.

Admission to all performances is free. The Northside Music Festival, brought to you by Dublin City Council

The Xi' An Sí (pronounced 'Shee Ann Shee') is an amalgamation of both the Chinese and Irish languages.  'XiAn' being the city where the group first established themselves and 'Si' being derived from the most fascinating of Irish traditions, the fairy.  The group graduated together from the prestigious Xi'An Conservatory of Music in 2004.  Traditional Irish tunes are played on beautiful antique instruments such as, the Gu Zheng, a twenty-one stringed plucked instrument that is part of the zither family; the Er Hu, a two stringed bowed instrument which originated in China over a thousand years ago and the Pi Pa a four stringed plucked instrument with a pear shaped wooden body which can be traced back to the Qin dynasty (221-206B.C.). Instilled with the culture of two distant nations, The Xi'An Sessions allows the exotic timbres of Asia to play the welcoming host to the beautiful and expressive music of Ireland.

Location                                 Santry

Venue                                     St. Pappan's Church, Church Lane

Time                                       8pm, Indoor

There's a rare chemistry between Ariel Hernandez and Dermot Dunne, apparent from the moment they first shared a stage in 2004. Many nights later, the musical and personal rapport is getting stronger, and this is one creative partnership set to endure.  Hernandez supplies quiet authenticity, an unadorned voice and mastery of Latin guitar idioms, learned from the old players in his native Buenos Aires. Dunne, an accordionist of extravagant talent borne of classical rigour, and who enthusiastically embraces music in all its hues, elicits great drama from the accordion and negotiates the rhythmic twists and turns of this music as if he were born to it. A match made in heaven.   Fellow Argentine, Lucas Gonzalez adds subtle percussion and classic Latin guitar virtuosity to an already enduring mix.

With a big African Heart, virtuoso Senegalese kora player Seckou Keita and his international quintet are not to be confined to any one genre, dipping comfortably in and out of jazz, classical, Flamenco, with sometimes hints of rock and reggae. Regular act on the WOMAD circuit, they never fail to impress.

Led by the experimental tunings and prodigious kora of Seckou Keita (Senegal) - also called "the Hendrix of the Kora"- the music is supported by the double bass/electric bass of Davide Mantovani (Italy), the eclectic percussions of Surahata Susso (Gambia) and the distinguished sound of the violin by Samy Bishai (Egypt) and the enchanting voice of the gracious Binta Susso (Gambia). The Seckou Keita Quintet - a beautiful, captivating, harmonious international band.
