Refurbished Ballyfermot Park sets New Standard

A greatly enhanced Kylemore Park opens officially to the public on Wednesday 22 July 12 noon on completion of a 9-month refurbishment programme.
Lord Mayor Cllr. Emer Costello will officiate at the opening ceremony and will be joined by residents from Ballyfermot. The project management team and officials from Dublin City Council will also attend

Lord Mayor Cllr. Emer Costello says, “This project is an example of what can be achieved when all stakeholders work together for a common objective. This greatly improved facility offers the residents of Ballyfermot a park that they can be proud off. It provides amenities for young people and adults of all ages in the Ballyfermot area. This park sets a standard for the development and refurbishment of spaces throughout the city in the future. It also demonstrates Dublin City Council’s commitment to the provision of the highest quality amenities to its communities.”

Gerry Barry, Dublin City Council’s Head of Parks and Landscape services says,  “Kylemore Park sets a new standard for parks and open spaces within this city and nationally. This project is an example of were local consultation and knowledge was effective at all stages of the design process, the result is an outstanding community facility that sets an impressive benchmark for the future.”

The Kylemore Park refurbishment scheme has been completed at a cost of €1 million. The refurbished park boasts a completely re-landscaped space including a floodlit five aside Astroturf facility as well as a basketball/football combination unit, a boules area, slides, climbing frames and other play elements.

Notes to the Editor

The project is the result of years of campaigning and hard work by the local residents, the Urban Ballyfermot Programme, the Parks and Landscape Services Division and the Ballyfermot Area Office of Dublin City Council. It was initiated in 2004 when a local group of residents approached the Ballyfermot Urban II programme with a plan to refurbish a local open space that was plagued by vandalism and antisocial behaviour. The Kylemore Park Action Group was formed and they spearheaded the redevelopment with the help of the City Council’s Parks and Landscape Services Division.

The project replaces the former play area that included a number of 5-a-side pitches enclosed by railings. In the refurbished park the space is opened up to the surrounding streets and criss-crossed by tree lined avenues. Colourful planting forms an edge to the park and new lighting and CCTV will provide increased security. The new and improved play and recreational facilities provide local residents with plenty of opportunities to enjoy their park in the years ahead.

The project has been co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund through the Urban II Initiative, The National Development Plan 2000 –2006, the Rapid Programme and Dublin City Council, with the bulk of the finance being provided by the City Council.
