Kilbarrack Fire Station embraces sustainable work practices as Lord Mayor launches Sustainability Report 2010

Dublin’s Lord Mayor Gerry Breen and City Manager John Tierney will launch Dublin City Council’s Sustainability Report 2010 and a Green Plan for Kilbarrack Fire Station on Wednesday 15th September 2010, at 12.30pm in Kilbarrack Fire Station, Tonlegee Road, Kilbarrack Dublin 5.

The Report is the first of its kind and sets out the Council’s principles, vision and actions for increasing the economic, social and environmental sustainability of Dublin City. The seven focus areas of the Report are: energy, water, waste, biodiversity, transport, society and procurement.  Kilbarrack Fire Station, through its Green Plan, has been chosen as this years Flagship Project.

The Project shows how the station can actively reduce their energy and water consumption, prevent unnecessary waste and create a more sustainable community.

“The Report details our move towards more planned sustainable management of our activities, to better meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world.  I am delighted to be here at the Kilbarrack Fire Station to witness first hand, the crews’ enthusiasm and willingness to embrace sustainable practices in their workplace”,
said the Lord Mayor.

The Lord Mayor will meet and congratulate Kilbarrack Firefighters on their Green Action Plan, with examples of the new technologies being employed by them on display in the Energy Exhibition. Dublin Fire Brigade’s Pipe Band will also perform at the launch.

Ends.

Note to the Editor

Sustainability is a method of harvesting or using a resource for the benefit of today’s generation, so that the resource is not depleted or permanently damaged for the generations to come.

Dublin City Council is guided by the sustainability principles developed by ‘The Natural Step’. This involves reducing our dependence on fossil fuels, metals and minerals, as well as synthetic materials and artificial chemicals. It also means that we reduce our intrusion on nature and seek to protect the natural environment and bio-diversity (the diversity of plant and animal life in a particular habitat). The final principle relates to meeting human needs fairly and efficiently.
