Opening of Playground and All Weather Soccer Pitch Markievicz House

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Eibhlin Byrne, will officially open Dublin City Council’s new eagerly awaited playground and All Weather Soccer pitch at Markievicz House, Dublin 2 at 3pm on the 29th October 2008.

Markievicz House is one of the largest Dublin City Council housing complexes in the city with 171 apartments and over 250 children living in the complex.

Following consultation with the local residents, the need for a playground and football pitch was identified. Work on the playground finished in June 2008 and the football pitch has been operating since August 2008.

The Lord Mayor said “In a modern city children should be encouraged to exercise and integrate with other children. The opening of both this pitch and playground will facilitate this greatly. I am therefore very excited about this opening.”

Notes to the Editor

The Markievicz House Housing Complex is in the South East Inner City RAPID area. The pitch has been a huge success to the children and parents alike, with local residents organising football competitions for all ages.

The projects, which cost €165,000, were funded by Dublin City Council, the RAPID (Revitalising Areas through Planning, Investment and Development) Programme and the Dormant Accounts Scheme and The Football Association of Ireland HatTrick Programme.
