Last year in Sydney 2.2 million people participated in Earth Hour by switching off their lights and their efforts resulted in a 10% drop in energy usage. This year the event is going global with cities such as Chicago, Copenhagen and Toronto all taking part.
On February 6th, the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Cllr Paddy Bourke secured the support of Dublin City Council to endorse the Earth Hour campaign on March 29th from 8-9pm. Read more about Earth Hour in Dublin.
All of the Dublin local authorities and several other local authorities around the country have subsequently endorsed the campaign and the Office of Public Works has also confirmed their agreement to endorse the Earth Hour campaign.
Earth Hour will see places in Ireland such as Dublin, Galway and Limerick combining with cities from all over the world to reduce energy use by switching off non-essential lights for an hour on March 29th between 8 and 9pm.
