Lord Mayor Encourages Young People to “Go Ballistic”

Lord Mayor, Councillor Eibhlin Byrne will formally launch Dublin’s exciting ‘Summer of Sport’ initiative on Thursday 31st July 2008 at 2p.m. in the Mansion House, Dawson St. D.2.  Dublin City Council are proud to lead this multi sport initiative allowing young people to experience sport in a non-competitive, fun and simplified rules fashion.

 

Dublin City Council in conjunction with the Football Association of Ireland, the Irish Rugby Football Union and Dublin GAA County Board are delighted to introduce this unique sporting event for the summer of 2008. It will run during the month of August at 4 venues across the City – Cabra, Ringsend, Crumlin and Darndale with games ranging from soccer, Gaelic games and tag rugby.

 

Also in attendance to launch this eagerly awaited initiative will be Packie Bonner - Technical Director FAI, Frank Kelly – Personnel Officer Dublin City Council, Danny O Connor – Vice Chairman Dublin GAA County Board and Scott Walker – National Domestic Games Manager IRFU.

Note to the Editor:

The format on each night will allow each team to play twenty minutes of one sport and then rotate to sample the other two sports. Each team will consist of three players and all games will last for three minutes. This initiative, whilst re-creating old Dublin City model street teams is about encouraging young people to become physically active in short sharp bursts of sport while showcasing three major team sports to those who take part.

 

Each sport will follow the guidelines outlined below.

  • 3 V 3 Football 
  •  3 players per team
  • 3 minute game

It’s fast and fun
 
3 V 3 Tag Rugby

  • 3 players per team
  • 2 tags per player
  • Pass the ball over a tag

3 v 3 GAA Smart Touch

  • 3 players per team
  • quick-fire 3 minute games
  • Passing, shooting and solo skills
