Summer Fun For Dublin’s Youth

The Lord Mayor of Dublin Councillor Paddy Bourke will launch “Opportunities for Young People, Summer 2008”, on Tuesday 6th May 2008 at 7pm in The Atrium, Civic Offices, Dublin 8.

The Lord Mayor said “Dublin City Council, Catholic Youth Centre and Dublin Parks Tennis League have done tremendous work for Dublin’s young people over the years.  The 2008 Summer programme of activities and events is very varied and over 50,000 young people are expected to participate.  I hope everyone taking part in the events will have an exciting and fun-filled summer.”

Dublin City Council, Catholic Youth Centre and Dublin Parks Tennis League will provide and support a wide range of activities and events throughout the summer of 2008.  Activities and events planned range from summer projects, art programmes, drama and rap workshops to various sporting activities and special events. 

Dublin Public Libraries have planned once again a varied programme for children this summer “Many Faces, Many Places”.  All activities will have an intercultural theme, aimed at informing children about other cultures, as well as giving them a chance to learn more about their own.

EXHIBITION 

INTERFACE By Gino Kenny

A photographic exhibition which evolved as a result of Gino Kenny’s extensive travels over a period of seven years. It is made up of 60 portrait photographs from 13 different countries, inspired by the many people he met along his journey. This exhibition is available to view throughout the month of July in the Central Library, Ilac Centre, Henry Street.

SUMMER READING TREE CHALLENGE

Join in the fun this summer for the Reading Tree challenge at participating libraries. Get a logbook and then all you need to do to earn a certificate is read six books. Younger readers can decorate the library’s tree with fruit as they read throughout the summer. Certificates awarded at your local library. 

LEARNING BUS

Dublin City Libraries Learning Bus is a fully equipped mobile learning unit aimed at bringing computer learning into your community. The Learning Bus is equipped with six multi-media computer stations with full Internet access and a full range of support material including books, magazines, CDs and DVDs. Free tuition is available to help get you started with computers and the Internet. Gulliver’s Travels Art Competition

Dublin City Public Libraries has organised an art competition to celebrate One City, One Book – Gulliver’s Travels. Create your own design for a book cover that could be used for Gulliver’s Travels. Your entry must be on A4 sized paper and can be created using any type of art materials you like.

Don’t forget to borrow a copy of the book at your local library!

Simply submit your entry, with your name, age and telephone number, to your local library before the closing date.
