First Citizen of Dublin says ‘Thank you’

The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Paddy Bourke, will present the Lord Mayor’s Awards for 2008 in the Round Room of the Mansion House on Wednesday 28th May 2008 at 7.30pm.

 

These awards honour individuals and groups who have made a special contribution both at home and abroad.  The awards are an annual event and are Dublin City’s way of saying ‘thank you’ to the recipients.

 

“I am delighted to have this opportunity tonight to acknowledge the accomplishments of six exceptional individuals and one dedicated organisation.  The Lord Mayor’s Awards honour and recognise the care, generosity and commitment of these recipients, their work improves the lives of thousands of people both at home and abroad.  They are an inspiration to us all” said the Lord Mayor.

 

This years recipients are: City of Dublin VEC – Adult Literacy Programme, Joe Connolly, Dr. Veronica Dunne, Sean Kelly, Niall Mellon, Ann Reihill and Adi Roche.

City of Dublin VEC - Adult Literacy Programme:  CDVEC has a long and dedicated commitment to lifelong learning particularly in the area of adult literacy.  Up to 6,000 students participate annually on the Adult Literacy Programme provided by CDVEC. 

Joe Connolly:  Joe’s commitment and dedication to the promotion of sport, in the form of the Community Games, for young people both within his own community and on a National level has meant that many opportunities are now available to young people wishing to get involved in sports.

Dr. Veronica Dunne:  Veronica is a renowned vocal musician and a magnificent role model, mentor and advocate for the vocal arts both at home and abroad.  Veronica’s continuous support and dedication to the students she teaches has ensured that they have become some of Opera’s greatest stars.

Sean Kelly:  During his time as President of the GAA, Séan introduced many positive changes and is most remembered for the opening of Croke Park to Rugby and Soccer.

Niall Mellon:  Within just 5 years The Niall Mellon Township Trust has implemented innovative solutions to help eradicate the urban poverty within the Townships of South Africa.  Through Niall’s inspirational leadership thousands of volunteers have travelled from Ireland to work with the project which is now one of the largest provider of low cost homes for the poor in South Africa.

Ann Reihill:  The Dublin City Gallery, The Hugh Lane, has experienced some profound changes in direction and focus since Ann joined the Board of Trustees of the Gallery.  Ann’s commitment and guidance has ensured that the Dublin City Gallery, The Hugh Lane, is a leading Gallery of Contemporary Art.

Adi Roche:  Adi has been campaigning for and publicly active in issues relating to the environment, peace and justice since 1977 and is renowned for her continuous care and work with the children of Chernobyl.  Adi’s compassion and dedication to this project has made a huge difference to the lives of these children.
