The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Eibhlin Byrne will open a new exciting project on Friday 26th September 2008 at 2pm in May Park, Donnycarney.
This major redevelopment in the north city area, at a cost of €4.3M involved three projects. The re-development and modification of Donnycarney Park, known locally as May Park, was undertaken to facilitate the build of new state of the art senior citizen accommodation called Clanmaurice Court. The project also involved the development of a Multi-Use Games Area (M.U.G.A.) which includes a children's playground, playing pitches and changing facilities for football clubs at Donnycarney Park.
Speaking at the launch today the Lord Mayor said “There is no more important mark of a community than the commitment it shows to its older people and the care given to its young. With its redevelopment May Park provides quality housing in the heart of community activity. By drawing our young and our old citizens together in quality surroundings Dublin City Council have done much for social cohesion. I believe this is truly the way forward for this area, which I represent, and our city.”
The new Senior Citizen accommodation at Clanmaurice Court consists of 24 bungalow style units which were designed by Dublin City Council and are part of a long-term redevelopment and replacement strategy throughout the City which focuses on the upgrading of existing complexes that have bed-sit type accommodation, with new units that include one or two bedrooms. The strategy also focuses on the need to enhance support and care services for the elderly. Support services being provided at Clanmaurice Court include hot meals, which are provided by St. John’s Court and a minibus to bring the residents to this location.
The Multi-Use Games Area and the playground within the Park, which are separated from Clanmaurice Court by a small entrance road, have helped the Park to reach its full potential and are a big hit with the local children and residents.
