Launch of Report  on ‘Funding The Dublin City Region’

On Thursday 25th September 2008 at 11 a.m. in the Rotunda of City Hall Dublin’s Lord Mayor Eibhlin Byrne will launch the report ‘Funding The Dublin City Region’.

The report originated from the Finance Strategic Policy Committee (SPC) of Dublin City Council and focuses on how Dublin as the Capital region might be funded into the future.  A Funding Alliance has been established comprising members of the Finance SPC, representatives of political parties, business groups, universities and ICTU.  The purpose of this Funding Alliance is to secure ongoing funding for projects in the City Region that enhances the quality of life in the City by addressing perceived deficiencies in the public realm and respond to the vision of the Region as a global leader as a place to live, to work in, and to visit.

There is consensus emerging that the most reliable spatial model of Ireland will be based on a single City region on the east coast serving the entire country.

The plan outlines a profile of the Dublin City Region while examining its development strategy.  It considers how Dublin can best be served by the national and regional priorities contained within the NDP and looks at the competitiveness of the Region.  Finally, it outlines various sources of funding which might be considered and makes a series of recommendations based on the core message that investment in Dublin is good for the national economy.

The Lord Mayor speaking at the launch said “As a member of the Funding Alliance I am delighted to be involved with the launch of this much awaited report today.  This report identifies the importance of Dublin as a key driver in the economic and social development of the country.  I applaud the work that has been done to date by the Funding Alliance in bringing this report to fruition and I look forward to seeing some of its recommendations being brought into force”.

The Chairperson of the Finance SPC, Councillor Michael Donnelly, stated in the report that “The Funding Alliance has expressed a vision of the City, which all participants wish to develop into the future. Having travelled so far in terms of the improvement in quality and range of all aspects of the City fabric, we must set our sights to the future and put in place the actions required to continue this momentum”.
