Planning and Design

Designing and implementing new parks and upgrading existing public spaces form a substantial component of the work undertaken by landscape architects and professional staff in the Parks and Landscape Services Division. The division also provides professional expertise on landscape issues in the planning process of new development throughout the city. This advice ranges from the protection of trees on individual sites to approving open space proposals on larger scale developments and ensuring appropriate recreational facilities are provided for new residents.

Parks play an integral role both in new urban development and in urban regeneration. Father Collins Park is central to the current North Fringe development in north Dublin, while a number of new parks have been designed as part of the Ballymun regeneration scheme. Balcurris, Whiteacre and Coultry Park are now open with Poppintree Park due to reopen to the public later this year.

Public consultation forms an important part of the design process within Dublin City Council Parks and Landscape Services Division.

Accessibility to parks and open spaces is an important issue with audits for all parks now complete, with the next stage being a programme of implementation works to ensure all parks are equally catered for. Due to the scale of the task, the works will be phased over the next few years. Work has just begun on this phase of the project.

Neagh Road Update

Dublin City Council Parks and Landscape Services Division have been working closely with the residents on the proposed redevelopment of the park at Neagh Road. To date we have had three meetings in total, an initial introductory one to establish the scope of the work, an interim presentation give to develop the design concept  (April), with a presentation of the proposed design given on the 18th of June. In addition we also organised visits to five parks constructed in the last 4 years as part of our design consultation process. The local community representatives have now signed off the design and Parks Division has now moved the design detail stage, aiming to produce a drawing package and cost plan for submitting to the budget estimates in September.

La Fanu Update

Dublin City Council Parks and Landscape Services Division is currently developing a new proposed design for Le Fanu Park in Dublin 10. The concept for the new design aims to interpret some of the writings of Irish author Sheridan Le Fanu, after whom the park is named. In addition the inclusion of facilities such as a heritage garden,a wildlife area, sensory garden, play area and skate park are also under consideration. Part of the original park is now the location of the recently opened Ballyfermot Leisure Centre and the new park design shall aim to enhance linkage to it.
