If you sell, trade-in or give away your vehicle to another person, you must change the name of the ‘Registered Owner’ to the new owner. Otherwise you will continue to be responsible for parking or other offences in which it is involved.
The way you change ownership depends on when your vehicle was first registered:
Vehicles First Registered before January 1st 1993
Step 1: Complete a Change of Ownership Form
The current owner of the vehicle must complete Parts A and C of the form.
When this has been done, give Part C to the new owner.
The new owner must then complete Part B of the form.
Read this important note about company-owned vehicles.
Note: If the new owner of the vehicle is a Motor Dealer, the current owner must send Parts A and B to the local Motor Tax. Find your local tax office below.
Step 2: Complete the Registration Book
If you are the new owner, enter your name and address in the ‘Next Owner’ section of the vehicle’s Registration Book.
If the Registration Book is missing, the current owner of the vehicle must apply for a replacement. Find out how to get a replacement
Step 3: Return the form and Registration Book
When all this has been done, the current owner must send Parts A and B of the form and the updated Registration Book to a Motor Tax Office. Find your local tax office below.
Note: If the new owner of the vehicle is a Motor Dealer, do not send the Registration Book to the Motor Tax office. Instead, give it to the Motor Dealer. He/she must then keep it safe until the vehicle is sold to another person.
Step 4: New ownership details will be processed
The new ownership details will then be processed and documents updated.
Vehicles First Registered on or after January 1st 1993
Step 1: Complete your Vehicle registration Certificate or Vehicle Licensing Certificate
You should have received this certificate when your vehicle was first taxed.
Vehicles registered on of after 28/05/2004 are issued with a vehicle registration certificate, and any vehicle registered on or after 01/01/1993 that changed ownership on or after 28/05/2004 will be issued with a vehicle registration certificate.
If your Vehicle Licensing Certificate or vehicle registration certificate is missing, the current owner of the vehicle must apply for a replacement. Find out how to get a replacement.
Step 2: Send the certificate to us
Send the completed certificate to the following address:

Step 3: New ownership details will be processed

Note: If the Vehicle Registration Certificate is missing, and If there is no contact with the seller, the new owner must submit the Statutory Declaration Form to the Department of Transport, Shannon, Co. Clare. The Declaration includes garage certified details and the sworn date of purchase can be used as the date from which the tax is to be charged, no Garda stamp is required. No Rf134 needed.
