Dublin City Council adopted the first Road Safety Plan in the country in 1998 with the objective of improving road user behaviour and reducing road collisions in the City Council area. The third Dublin City Council Road Safety Plan covers the period 2009 to 2012.
It is based on collision data for the years 1998 to 2007. It offers a strategic direction for road safety in Dublin City Council at a local level in terms of Engineering, Enforcement, Education and Evaluation. The principal aims of the third Road Safety Plan are as follows:
- to provide a focus on road safety and to ensure that road safety underpins all transportation policy measures in the City Council
- to highlight the scale of the deaths and injuries that are occurring at present on the City Council’s road network
- to develop a road safety policy and action plan to improve safety for all road users in the city
- to develop new initiatives to target specific vulnerable road safety groups and
- to play a role in meeting national road safety targets set out in the Road Safety Strategy 2007 to 2012
The main objective in the Road Safety Plan is to reduce the number of casualties on the streets of Dublin City Council and to provide focus on making Dublin a safer city for all road users. You can download a copy of the following:
