BirdWatch Ireland and RSPB Northern Ireland created a list which categorises and prioritises bird species according to the conservation action required to maintain their populations at Favourable Conservation Status.

There are three broad categories:

• Red list species
• Amber list species
• Green list species

Red list species are of greatest conservation concern and Green list are of least conservation concern.
