To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Old Dublin Society (ODS) in 1934 Dublin City Public Libraries is pleased to host an exhibition detailing the Society's foundation and development.
The ODS was established with the aim of promoting the study of the history of Dublin and of Dubliners. The exhibition details the founding of the ODS by Peter Kearney and Alderman Thomas Kelly as well as its successful efforts to establish a Civic Museum for the city of Dublin. Since its foundation the ODS has met on a regular basis where papers are read by members and later published in the Dublin Historical Record, a twice yearly publication. Throughout its history the ODS has endeavoured to promote an interest in the history of Dublin through its schools essay competition and the annual awarding of the "Society's Medal" for the best paper read during the winter sessions. In the exhibition past Presidents of the ODS are remembered as well as some of the curious artefacts brought to the attention of the Society such as manuscripts, prints, drawings, medals and coins. The ODS Library collection is held on permanent loan in the RDS Library and is available for reference and research use in the Library but may not be borrowed.
This Exhibition was curated by the Old Dublin Society, in association with Dublin City Libraries.
