Dublin Port Tunnel is a twin-bore tunnel of 4.5km that links Dublin Port to north county Dublin at the M50 motorway. The tunnel is a dedicated route for Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs). It succeeds in taking about 9,000 HGVs off the city streets each day.
The Tunnel is toll free for HGVs and coaches over 25 seats. All other vehicles must pay a toll.
History of the tunnel project
Planning for Dublin Port Tunnel started in 1993 as part of the Dublin Transportation Initiative. Pre-planning involved:
- Extensive public consultation
- Environmental impact review
- Construction method review
- Review of the impact of construction on local areas
The tunnel was financed by National Roads Authority (NRA) under the remit of the Department of Transport. The overall project budget was €752 million.
