Get a Refund on your Motor Tax

You can apply for a refund on your motor tax if your vehicle has been:

 

  1. Vehicle stolen and not recovered.
  2. Vehicle Scrapped/destroyed.
  3. Vehicle Permanently Exported.
  4. Vehicle Not Used.
    (Tax discs must be returned immediately after issue or in the case of a 3 month disc it must be returned prior to the commencement of the tax period.)
  5. Vehicle unused because of owner illness/injury.
  6. Vehicle unused because owner absent from the state for business, educational purposes or with the Defence Forces.
  7. Vehicle Duty Error.
    (only applies to Goods vehicles that may have been taxed at the incorrect unladen weight.)

Vehicles being “off the road” do not qualify for a refund.

In the case of 1) - 5) above there must be a full three calendar months of unexpired tax remaining on the disc in each particular case. In the case of 6) above the disc must be returned immediately after issue.

The Tax Disc, Vehicle Licensing/Registration Certificate or Log Book must me returned with an application for a refund.

Apply for a Tax Refund

To apply for a refund, follow these steps:

Step 1: Check that 3 unexpired calendar months are left on your tax disc

A minimum of 3 whole calendar months must be left on your tax disc. Tax discs with less than 3 months will not be refunded.

Step 2: Complete the Motor Tax Refund Application Form and have it stamped at a Garda Station

Step 3: see the List of supporting documentation required (PDF 66Kb) which must be submitted with every application.  Failure to submit the correct documentation will result in the application being denied

Step 4: Return the RF120 form and supporting documentation to us

Send the completed form(s) the address below.

If your vehicle was stolen, you do not need to return the tax disc.

Step 5: We will send you a refund

If your application is accepted, we will send you a refund by cheque within 10 working days.
