At the meeting of Fingal County Council on 21st January 2009, the Castleknock QBC scheme was approved, with amendments, to go forward to detailed design stage. The main features of the scheme include:
- Provision of approximately 2.3 km of Inbound bus lanes, and 1km of outbound bus lanes.
- Construction of new footpath sections on Castleknock Road and Carpenterstown Avenue.
- Construction of a widened footpath along the Phoenix Park wall (approximately 1 km length). This wall is a protected structure.
- Provision of 3 new signalised pedestrian crossings along the route in the vicinity of the Castleknock Village Centre, Chesterfield and the Ashtown Gate.
- Upgrading of various junctions along the route including the installation of full pedestrian facilities in all existing traffic signals.
- Linking of traffic signals along Castleknock Road to improve traffic management. This will require the upgrading of all traffic signals and the installation of ducting along the route.
- Introduction of clearway in Castleknock opposite the Village Centre to provide for an outbound bus lane during evening peak (4pm – 7pm Mon – Sat). Parking will be permitted outside clearway hours.
- Road widening to accommodate a left-turn lane for general traffic on Park Lodge and alterations to road markings to accommodate a right-turn lane and a bus lane on the approach to the Park Lodge/Castleknock Road Junction. New traffic signals with pedestrian facilities will be provided on Park Lodge at the junctions with Parklands and Castleknock Avenue.
- Carriageway narrowing to accommodate an off-road cycle track at Carpenterstown Park East, (approximately 400m)
- Removal of roundabout on Auburn Avenue at its junction with Old Navan Road. This roundabout will be replaced with a signalised junction, which will be linked and co-coordinated with the new signalised junction to be constructed at the N3/Auburn Avenue junction by the National Roads Authority.
- The works necessitate the removal of trees at some locations along the route, in particular Carpenterstown Avenue, Park Lodge (approximately 20), Auburn Ave (1 tree). All trees removed will be replaced with semi-mature trees. A new line of trees will be planted along Park Lodge and twelve new additional trees will be planted opposite the church on Laurel Lodge Road, additional trees will also be planted on Castleknock Road and at Auburn Avenue/Old Navan Road junction.
- Adjustments to kerb lines, build outs, traffic islands and junction modifications along the route.
- The upgrading of existing bus stops to QBC standard (shelters, kerbing and improved hard-standing areas) as required and relocation of some existing bus stops including Castleknock Road.
- The scheme also provides for the appropriate signing, lining and alterations to road drainage as required under the scheme.
