Proposed Rathfarnham Quality Bus Corridor Enhancements

Introduction

The Quality Bus Network Project Office (QBN Project Office) in association with Dublin City Council and South Dublin County Council proposes to improve the bus priority measures along Grange Road, Rathfarnham Road, Terenure Road North, Harold’s Cross Road, South Circular Road, Harrington Street, Camden Street, Wexford Street Adelaide Road and Earlsfort Terrace.

The Rathfarnham bus corridor is one of the early QBCs introduced and has seen a reduction in bus services due to the long delays experienced at several locations. At the moment the corridor is serviced by 155 inbound buses in morning peak and 152 outbound buses in the evening peak. A significant number of buses use parts of this corridor particularly around Camden Street and Harcourt Road.

Brief Description of Proposals

The main proposals are as follows:

  • Enhance the existing bus lanes by providing first priority bus lanes in the inbound and outbound directions along the route
  • Improve cycling facilities both in the inbound and outbound directions
  • Upgrade the signalised junctions and pedestrian crossings
  • Upgrade all bus stops by providing Kassel Kerbs, shelters, etc
  • Provide entry treatments at minor side roads
  • Provide upgraded or corrected Mobility Impaired Disabled (MID) surfaces at all junctions and pedestrian crossings

Implementation Plan

It is proposed to put the scheme for Public Consultation before the end of 2009. Meanwhile the upgrade of all bus stops is to commence soon. The other works will be carried out in the 2010-2011 period.
