Tallaght QBC Enhancements – The N81

The Quality Bus Network Project Office in partnership with South Dublin County Council has prepared a preliminary design to introduce bus lanes on The Tallaght Bypass (The N81) between Old Bridge Road and Spawell Road roundabout and between the M50 and Fortunestown Road. The scheme will provide the maximum bus priority along the route and will involve widening sections of The Tallaght Bypass. It will also provide improved cycle facilities, improved safety measures and the upgrading of pedestrian crossing facilities. When completed, The Tallaght Bypass QBC will provide a direct route from Tallaght to Dublin city centre, allowing for quick and reliable bus services.

Brief Description of Proposals

The main proposals of the scheme are to:

  • Provide priority for buses along the route
  • Widen the southern side of the Tallaght Road roundabout to provide a dedicated bus lane around the roundabout. Widening would also be required on the northern side on the approach to the roundabout
  • Widen both the inbound and outbound hard shoulders between Whitestown Way and Killinarden Way by approximately 0.7m on the northern side and 0.8m on the southern side
  • Widen the northern side of the carriageway between Cookstown Road and Fortunestown Road by up to 2.5m
  • It is proposed that the bus lanes will be operational 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Reduce the speed limit between Cheeverstown Centre and Spawell Road roundabout from 60km/h to 50km/h
  • Modify traffic islands to allow for straight through bus lanes at signalised junctions
  • Buses travelling in the outbound direction (away from Dublin city) will have approximately 4.27 kilometres of new bus lane. Buses travelling in the inbound direction (towards Dublin city) will have approximately 2.56 kilometres of new bus lane which will tie in with the existing bus lane
  • Relocation of a pedestrian crossing between Killinarden Heights and Fortunestown Road to the controlled signalised junctions at these locations
  • Improve cycle and pedestrian facilities along the route
  • Upgrade all existing bus stops through the provision of new shelters, kassel kerbs etc
  • Provide 8 new bus stops (4 in the inbound direction and 4 in the outbound) at the following locations: 2 close to Avonmore Road junction, 2 close to Greenhills Road junction, 2 at Old Bawn Road junction and 2 at the footbridge to the square
  • Provide significant savings for bus users in the morning and evening peak
  • Upgrade signalised junctions along the route to improve priority for buses on the approach to junctions

The Green Route QBC - Old Bawn Road

The Quality Bus Network Project Office in partnership with South Dublin County Council has prepared a preliminary design to introduce bus lanes on a section of the Green Route QBC on Old Bawn Road between Firhouse Road and the N81. The scheme will provide the maximum bus priority along the route and will involve widening of Old Bawn Road. It will be necessary to remove a number of trees along the route. Some of these will be replaced with semi-mature trees at Dodder Valley Park while some will be replaced with young trees at the same position. The scheme will also provide improved cycle facilities, improved safety measures and the upgrading of pedestrian crossing facilities.
