Careers in the Fire Brigade

What you can do

Careers in the Fire Brigade fall into 3 categories.

1. Full-time Firefighters

The main duties of a full-time firefighter are to help protect the public in emergency situations. Firefighters also work in ambulances.

Full-time firefighters work a shift system. This comprises nine-hour days and fifteen-hour nights across four watches. 

Career Development

After 7 years as a Firefighter, you can apply for promotion to the rank of Sub Officer. Ranks above this include Station Officer, District Officer and Third Officer.

2. Retained Firefighters 

Retained firefighters are usually self-employed and live near their station of operations. It is vital that you are able to respond to a call within 3-5 minutes of being alerted.

3. Full-Time Fire Prevention Officers

The main duties of a Fire Prevention Officer are to survey buildings under construction and existing buildings to ensure fire safety regulations are adhered to. Fire Prevention Officers can also be called to major fires where a coordinator is required.

Training

Fire Prevention Officers are usually graduates of engineering, architecture or surveying.

Qualifications you need to join the fire brigade

Age

You must be at least 18 years of age. Firefighters retire at 55 years of age.

Health

You must match a state of health determined by Dublin City Council’s Medical Advisor. Candidates must also comply with the various physical standards.

Education

You must have obtained at least a Grade D (or pass) in five subjects, including Maths and English from the approved list of subjects in the Department of Education Intermediate, Junior or Group Certificate Examination or in an exam of at least equivalent standard.

Entrance Exam

You will be required to complete an entrance exam.

Interview

You will be required to attend for interview(s).

Other

You must hold a current full unendorsed Driving Licence (Category B).
