Dodder Flood Alleviation Scheme

Update 31/01/2011

Lower Dodder Flood Alleviation Works - Ringsend Bridge to New Bridge

All flood defence works downstream of Londonbridge are complete. This includes the construction of 210m of reinforced concrete floodwalls by Shelbourne Park, and the placement of approx 250m of sheet piles between Londonbridge and Shelbourne, with the further construction of 190m of floodwall and 60m of earth embankment on top of these piles. All ancillary works such as landscaping, the placement of masonry cladding, pavement reinstatement, placement of security fencing, and so on are substantially complete.

Flood works are complete by the back of O’Connell Gardens and the side of Aviva Stadium with this access opened to the public on 21/12/2009. These works involved the placement of 145m of sheet piles, the construction of 310m of reinforced concrete floodwall (part of which is on the sheet piles), and the placement of 70m of flood embankment. This work was carried out in partnership with the Lansdowne Stadium Development Company.

Works between Londonbridge and Newbridge Avenue are complete. Over 270m of sheetpiles have been placed and 332m of concrete floodwall constructed. The pedestrian access along the east bank of the river between Newbridge Avenue and Londonbridge was opened to the public in May 2010. A further 85m of floodwall has been constructed in ‘the Jungle’ area of Newbridge Avenue. The Reinstatement in the Jungle and Lansdowne Village areas has not taken place. The Jungle area is being held as a compound for the final phase of coastal protection works to the Railway Bridge.

The initial design parameters for the raising of the wall parapets at Londonbridge and Newbridge are agreed. Draft proposal drawings for Part 8 have been issued for consultation with local councillors, residents, Road Dept and other major stakeholders. Proposal for Newbridge is largely agreed but further liaison with local representatives is required for Londonbridge.

The Part 8 for Final Section of Coastal Protection - River Dodder has been redrafted and resubmitted closing date for submissions is 22nd February. Liaising with landowners and other stakeholders is ongoing. The detailed design is to follow on planning approval. It is envisaged that construction will start in April 2011. An information day was organised on Thursday 27th January 2011. The Part 8 proposals are below:

Lower Dodder Flood Alleviation Works - Phase 2

The proposed work along this section of the Dodder river involves raising some of the flood defence levels on both sides of the River from the Lansdowne Road railway bridge to upstream of Donnybrook Bridge. The required flood defence levels have been established as an output of the River Dodder Flood Risk Assessment and Management Study (CFRAMS)

The work will involve the construction of flood defence walls incorporating flood gates and flood defence embankments, raising of bridge parapets and work on weirs. The work is similar in nature to the ongoing flood defence work downstream of Newbridge (Lansdowne Road Bridge) as carried out by the Office of Public Works (OPW).  At present DCC are in the process of selecting a consultant who will carry out the detailed design.
