Dublin City Council holds a variety of public meetings in its role as a forum for public representatives. These meetings are convened by your elected councillors/public representatives.
Come to a City Council Meeting
You are entitled to attend any council meeting. To gain access to a meeting, you need a ‘pass’. These passes are free of charge. To get a pass, contact your local public representative/councillor.
Press passes: Members of the press with a valid ‘Press Pass’ can attend Council meetings without contacting a councillor.
Types of Meeting held by the Council
The following meetings are held during the year:
Note: This list does not include meetings held in support of the Council’s general administrative role, e.g. daily operational meetings.
The monthly meetings provide a general forum where your elected representatives discuss issues relevant to the well-being of the city.
The monthly meetings take place in City Hall at 6.45pm on the first Monday of every month.
In the event of a public holiday, the meeting takes place on the second Monday of the month. There is no monthly meeting in August.
Dublin City Council is legally obliged to hold an annual meeting. The Lord Mayor of Dublin and the Deputy Lord Mayor are elected at this meeting.
Between 2009 and 2014, this meeting is being held on the last Monday of June each year.
Dublin City Council is legally obliged to hold an annual budget meeting. The annual budget is debated and agreed on during this meeting. The ‘Annual Rate on Valuation’ for Property Rates is also adopted at this meeting.
This meeting is held in late November or early December (within a period prescribed by the Minister for the Environment, Community and Local Government).
Area Committee Meetings
Area Committee meetings are convened by the elected representatives of each of the 5 administrative areas of Dublin City Council (shown below).
The purpose is to provide a forum for discussing issues that are only relevant to each of these local areas.
The 5 administrative areas of Dublin City Council are:
- Central Area
- North Central Area
- North West Area
- South Central Area
- South East Area
Area Committee meetings are held each month.
Strategic Policy Committee Meetings
The purpose of these meetings is to prepare and debate policy alternatives for the operational areas of Dublin City Council. Strategic Policy Committees meet approximately every second month.
