CIE SCULPTURE PROJECT

A unique sculpture, commemorating the development of the Railway Works at Inchicore and the CIE Estate, was unveiled by Lord Mayor Cllr. Paddy Bourke on 14th December 2007.

Dublin City Council, through the Kilmainham Area Office and the Parks & Landscaping Department, has been working with the CIE Works Residents Association and Iarnrod Eireann to develop the sculpture project.

The Inchicore Works was founded in 1845 and the Works Estate, purpose built for workers and their families, was occupied for the first time in 1847.

Over time a great engineering site and a unique community evolved here, a community in which the spirit, crafts, trades, loyalties and ingenuity of its workforce were constantly drawn upon in the dramatic Irish political and cultural life. This is reflected in the shared pride of residents who, today, actively seek to preserve and enhance the distinct architectural and social heritage of the area.

The sculpture was created in the Leitrim Sculpture Centre while local resident and employee of Iarnrod Eireann, Mr. Conor Murphy, cast the bronze plaque and tools on-site in the Inchicore Works.
