There are 11 local electoral areas within Dublin City Council. These are:
- Artane/Whitehall (5 seats)
- Ballymun/Finglas (5 seats)
- Clontarf (5 seats)
- Donaghmede (4 seats)
- Cabra/Glasnevin (5 seats)
- North Inner City (6 seats)
- Pembroke/Rathmines (6 seats)
- South East Inner City (4 seats)
- Ballyfermot/Drimnagh (4 seats)
- Crumlin/Kimmage (4 seats)
- South West Inner City (4 seats).
A person may nominate himself/herself as a candidate or may, with his/her consent, be nominated by a proposer who is registered as a local government elector in the area of the local authority for which he/she proposes to nominate the candidate. A nomination paper from a
candidate of a registered political party must have a certificate of political affiliation attached which must be produced to me with his/her completed nomination paper. If no certificate is attached, the candidate must, before the latest time for receiving nominations, either secure 15 assents to the nomination by way of statutory declarations by local government electors registered in the relevant local electoral area or make a deposit of €100 in the case of an election of members of a city council (deposit may also be made on the candidate’s behalf).

In general these Acts provide for the conduct of Elections including nominations, postal voting, special voting, arrangements for the Poll, the taking of the poll, procedure and facilities for voting, counting of votes, rules for the counting of votes and electoral offences. Other relevant statutory provisions include the:

- Local Elections (Disclosure of Donations and Expenditure) Act 1999 as amended by the
Electoral (Amendment) Act 2001, the Electoral (Amendment) Act 2002 and the Electoral (Amendment) Act 2009.
- Local Elections (Petitions and Disqualifications) Act 1974
- Electoral Act 1992 as amended by the Electoral (Amendment) Act 1996, the Electoral
Act 1997, the Electoral (Amendment) Act 2001, the Electoral (Amendment) Act 2002, the
Electoral (Amendment) Act 2006 and the Electoral (Amendment) Act 2007.
