Meet the Lord Mayor

Cllr Emer Costello is the serving Lord Mayor of Dublin.  She was elected to the position of Lord Mayor on 15th June 2009. She is the 340th Lord Mayor of Dublin and the seventh woman to hold the position.

About the Lord Mayor, Cllr Emer Costello

The Lord Mayor was elected for the North Inner City Local Electoral Area.  She lives in Stoneybatter, Dublin with her husband Joe Costello TD.


Employment History

A graduate of UCD, Emer  (the Lord Mayor) has had a distinguished and varied career working in the areas of international co- operation, education and training.
She worked for ten years (until 2007) as Programme Manager of the Education Service, Léargas, the Irish National Agency for European co-operation programmes in the field
of education, training and youth. In this capacity she represented Ireland on many working groups on school and adult education policy at European level. She currently represents Ireland’s City and County Councillors on the Council of Europe’s Congress of Local and Regional Authorities.

Prior to joining Léargas she worked as the Heritage Co-ordinator with Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council where she produced a number of local history publications through a FAS Community Training Programme. She has also previously worked as a teacher with the City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee in Marino and Finglas, Dublin. 

Since becoming a councillor in 2003, Emer has been a strong advocate for the people of Dublin. She strongly believes in community consultation and participation in all aspects of the City’s Development. 

She is an active member of the following bodies and organisations:

  • Dublin Inner City Partnership
  • Board of the Royal Irish Academy of Music
  • Former Chairperson of Historic Area Rejuvenation Project (HARP) in the Smithfield and Markets area, O’Connell Street Integrated Area Plan and the North East Inner City Integrated Area Plan
