A dazzling display from ‘Winter Lights Dublin City’

A Christmas gift for Dublin
A dazzling display from ‘Winter Lights Dublin City’
December 2nd 2018 – January 2nd 2019

After nearly one year in planning, ‘Winter Lights Dublin City’ which is proudly presented by Dublin City Council is now LIVE.  The ambitious new concept to illuminate the city this Christmas in thirteen locations for 31 days until January 2nd 2019 was conceived to elevate Dublin to take its place amongst the iconic 'Cities of Light' around the world.

Dublin has always been enchanting at Christmas with a great family tradition of a trip into town to see the lights. ‘Winter Lights Dublin City’ gives families lots of opportunities to see and experience the magical lights at a time and day that suits them.  Some Dubliners love the excitement, hustle and bustle of the city at Christmas. Others will choose a time when the city slumbers, bathed in a magical medley of lights.

Winter Lights Dublin City features thirteen iconic sites illuminated and animated for 31 nights using customised projections. The lights envelop the city with in a festive fantasy with enhanced Christmas lights on city streets and building projections between sunset and 2am each night. The projections are now illuminating City Hall, Trinity College, Liberty Hall, Civic Offices, GPO, The Mansion House, Hugh Lane Gallery, Custom House and Covanta Dublin Waste to Energy Plant in Poolbeg.  Enhanced Christmas Lights are on Samuel Beckett Bridge, Millennium Bridge, O'Connell Street and Parliament Street.

Winter Lights Dublin City is eco-friendly and the technology for some of the projections will use lights that consume 80% less power than their traditional predecessors with the most innovative and advanced energy efficient technology, sourced in Italy. Plans for one of the bridges calls for 15 million colour combinations with the whole installation using less electric power than a domestic iron or 10 household light bulbs.  157,800 low power LEDs, 100 tonnes of equipment and 15,780 metres of cable have been employed to illuminate the city in a whole new way for 2018.

Lord Mayor of Dublin Nial Ring said “My team of helpers have been working as hard as Santa’s elves to make the vision of 'Winter Lights Dublin City' a reality.  Christmas is a wonderful, magical and enchanting time of year and the lighting of some of city’s great iconic buildings and structures will give everyone another reason to visit the city and view this exciting new seasonal experience.  I was always brought into ‘town’ for Christmas to look at the great Christmas window displays in Clerys and Switzers (showing my age!).  These features are sadly gone, but this ultra modern, yet brilliantly seasonal and innovative lighting display will, I hope, become a popular part of Christmas in the best city in the world – your city, my city, our city!”
