Lord Mayor Gerry Breen will launch Dublin’s National Tree Week events at Tolka Valley Park, Finglas, on Monday, 7th March at 11.30am.

National Tree Week takes place from 6th – 12th March this year. It’s an annual, week-long festival and this year’s theme is: ‘The Year of the Forest – Celebrating Forests for People’.  More than 20,000 trees will be planted during the week-long programme of events around Ireland.

The Lord Mayor will join local children from St. Finian’s National School in Finglas, Mary Keenan, Executive Director of the Tree Council of Ireland and Laura Turkington Head of Corporate Responsibility with Vodafone Ireland to plant native tree saplings at Tolka Valley Park.

The planting is part of the redevelopment of Tolka Valley Park, a former landfill site. In total, 6,000 native trees will be planted in Tolka Valley Park and environs. Vodafone will reimburse Dublin City Council for 2,500 of these trees as part of its ‘Green Agenda’, which sees Vodafone plant a tree for every 72 customers who switch to paperless billing.

National Tree Week is organised by the Tree Council of Ireland and is sponsored this year by Vodafone Ireland and Coillte.

Lord Mayor Breen says

“The trees that we are planting today will be a benefit to people in Finglas for generations to come. They will be a great addition to Tolka Valley Park and will give everyone who uses this beautiful park an appreciation of nature and the environment”.

Laura Turkington, Head of Corporate Responsibility with Vodafone Ireland:

“We are delighted to be part of this tree planting initiative as part of our sponsorship of National Tree Week. We recently launched a new paperless billing campaign which encourages our customers to switch to paperless billing and save trees. For every 72 customers who make the switch, we not only save a tree, but we pledge to plant one too. We have committed to plant a forest in each of the four provinces of Ireland.”
