Dublin’s Lord Mayor, Andrew Montague announced the St. Laurence Grove Environmental Group as winners of the Dublin City Neighbourhood Awards 2011 at a ceremony held in Croke Park on Thursday 29th September 2011.

In presenting the award the Lord Mayor said “the people of St Laurence Grove are great neighbours. Their strong sense of pride of place and selfless work is very obvious in their community and I am delighted to present this year’s award to them”.

St. Laurence Grove is located in Chapelizod in the heart of the South Central Area of Dublin. The Grove is a showpiece urban estate. The residents are true to their environmental ethos, the surround of beautiful granite stone at the entrance to the estate was made from salvaged stone, bird boxes have been placed at strategic locations and all flowers are grown from seed. All of this work, including weekly clean-ups is undertaken on a voluntary basis by residents.

Bernie Lillis who organised the awards on behalf of Dublin City Council said “In these tough economic times where budgets of local authorities are cut it is important to know that communities such as St Laurence Grove are playing their part in helping to keep their neighbourhoods clean and free of litter. The City Neighbourhoods Awards are all about acknowledging in a meaningful manner the hundreds of hours of voluntary work done by people in communities all over Dublin.  It is a recognition of the work done by residents and business’s in this city to create vibrant, visible and viable communities. It is about encouraging young people to be involved. It is about working with your Local Authority who provide the essential services in the heart of your community, but knowing that you also have a responsibility to build communities.”
