Dublin surpasses Paris in European fDi ratings

Europe loves Dublin: Latest fDi magazine rankings strengthen Dublin’s position as the Silicone Valley of Europe, as the City & Region continues to attract new investment:

Dublin City placed 2nd to London in “Overall: European Cities of the Future” as latest fDi Magazine rankings for 2018/19 published.

Dublin City Council announced today that the City and region have received a number of high profile awards in the latest fDi European Cities and Regions of the future rankings. fDi magazine – a publication from the Financial Times -  released its annual rankings for 2018/19 which showed that Dublin had leapfrogged Paris into 2nd place in the Overall Cities ranking.

This improvement in rankings from the 2016/17 performance follows the continued economic resurgence of the City, with fDi stating that “Dublin received the same number of projects in the financial services sector in the first 3 quarters of 2017 as it received in the whole of 2016 and 2015 combined”.  This strong performance has seen Dublin City overtake Paris in the rankings and remain ahead of its financial services competitors Amsterdam (4th place) and Frankfurt (7th Place).

Dublin Region climbs to 2nd place in overall European Regions of the future behind Paris and wins 4 major categories in 2018/19 fDi rankings.

Continued collaboration between key stakeholders (Dublin City Council and other Dublin Local Government Authorities, IDA Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, Local Enterprise Office and the Government of Ireland) saw Dublin City rank in 2nd place for 5 “Major Cities” categories in the 2018/19 results; Overall European Cities, Northern Cities, Major Cities, Best for Economic Potential, Best for Business Friendliness and Best for FDI strategy.

Dublin Region places 1st for 4 categories in 2018/19 fDi rankings.

The Dublin Region also saw major gains in the latest rankings placing 2nd behind Paris in the “Overall European Regions”; overtaking 3 major German industrial regions. The Dublin region also won a further 4 categories; Northern Regions, Small Regions, Best for Economic Potential and Best for Business Friendliness.

Cork, Limerick, Shannon, Waterford, Drogheda and Galway all winner for Small & Micro European Cities in 2018/19 fDi rankings.

From a national perspective Cork City was another major winner in “Small European Cities” category ranking 1st for Business Friendliness and 3rd for Economic Potential while Limerick, Waterford, Shannon and Drogheda all topped the tables for Micro Cities, Economic Potential and Business Friendliness.

Owen P. Keegan, Chief Executive Officer of Dublin City Council said “This latest series of results from the fDi rankings is very welcome news and supports our own analysis in the Dublin Economic Monitor on the continued improvements to the economic performance of the City and region. However, we must not become complacent as there are still a number of major challenges for the City and region to overcome.”

Greg Swift, Head of Economic Development & Enterprise, Dublin City Council said “The improvements in the fDi rankings for the City and region in 2018/19 demonstrate the value of joined up thinking and collaboration. We have been working very closely with our partners at local and national level in trying to make Dublin one of the best cities in Europe to Live, visit, work and invest”.

Cllr. Deirdre Heney, Chair of the Economic Development & Enterprise Strategic Policy Committee for Dublin City Council said: “Our committee is focused on developing and shaping economic policy for Dublin City and it is very encouraging to see continued and sustained improvements in our economic performance. We need to continue our efforts to try and ensure that small and medium enterprise will benefit from the same eco-system that we have developed to support FDI”.
