Las maestros de la RépublicaSaturday 7 April at 2pm at Pearse Street Library.

Las maestras de la Républica (Women School teachers of the Republic). (2013) Directed by Pilar Piérez Solano

Education was a central tenet of Spain’s Second Republic (1931-1939), with the objective of bringing culture and education to all parts of the country and all social classes. A group of female school teachers were part of this project and, working with male colleagues, also broke down barriers between male and female. These women stood for modernity and independence and Pilar Pérez Solano tells their story through archival footage and dramatized recreation of one young woman’s experiences. Las maestros de la República won the Goya Award for best documentary
