Football fans are in for a treat this Wednesday. Lord Mayor Gerry Breen will launch ‘Red Reminiscences: Shelbourne FC Oral History Project’ on Wednesday 11 May in the Central Library, Ilac Shopping Centre, at 1pm. This online project is a social history of Shelbourne and the club’s role in Irishtown and the wider community. FAI Chief Executive John Delaney will also attend.

Lord Mayor Breen says “This oral history project will provide a unique record of Shelbourne Football Club’s 115 -year history from the fans' and players’ perspective. It is commendable that these wonderful stories, which are part of Dublin’s rich sporting heritage, will be preserved at Dublin City Library and Archive, and will be accessible to historians and future generations to come.”

After the launch, the project interviews will be available as audio downloads and transcripts on www.dublinsportsarchive.wordpress.com. The site also includes an online form where other Shelbourne fans and players can log on to and add their own stories. The project will also enable fans to listen to and read stories in the Dublin City Library and Archive Reading Room, 138-144 Pearse Street, Dublin 2.

Football journalist and historian Peter Byrne will also give a talk at 1.30pm on the history of Irish football clubs in European competition. His talk ‘Great Nights and Special Goals - The Story of Ireland’s Love Affair with European Football’ will chart the ‘David and Goliath’ adventures of Dublin club sides like Shamrock Rovers, St Patrick’s Athletic and Bohemians in elite European competition.

Fans will also be able to view the famous Europa League Trophy and a football memorabilia exhibition. This forms part of Dublin city’s involvement in the hosting of the Europa League Final on 18th May. The trophy will be on display at the Central Library until 13th May

Notes to the Editor

Red Reminiscences

‘Red Reminiscences’ is an initiative of Dublin City Library and Archive. It records the memories of Shelbourne football supporters and players. Participants – who include record breaking centre forward Rory Dwyer - have been interviewed about their memories of ‘Shels’ adventures in domestic and European competition and the club’s many highs and lows its long and eventful history.

By interviewing both fans and players, the oral history extends the history of Shelbourne beyond the traditional perspective of events on the pitch and shows the relationship between sport, culture and everyday life in Dublin. The oral history records the impressions and emotions attached to the activity of playing for and supporting Shelbourne FC, as well as details of the playing pitches, players, managers, and traditions of a by-gone era.
