Lord Mayor Brendan Carr welcomes GAA announcement today to regenerate Sackville Avenue

"I welcome and support the announcement by the GAA today of the proposed renewal, redevelopment and reconfiguration of Sackville Avenue adjacent to Croke Park. The proposals will require planning permission and we look forward to receiving detailed plans from the GAA, which undoubtedly will make a significant contribution to the physical, economic and social regeneration of this area of the North East Inner City."

"The proposals to demolish the existing Croke Villas and to replace it with much needed new housing, together with a new entrance to the stadium and the building of a state of the art National Handball and Community Centre, heralds an exciting new vision for the area. It is also great to see that the longstanding impasse between the Irish Handball Sports Centre and Croke Park has finally been resolved. It marks the dawn of a new era of partnership between handball centre members, the GAA and the local community. To this end, I commend the work done by all involved in the mediation process through the chairmanship of Bertie Ahern with the support of GAA President Aogán Ó Fearghail, in bringing this agreement to fruition. This will prove to be of huge benefit to local residents, the handball community and GAA alike."

"Today’s announcement will undoubtedly serve as an impetus to all those involved in the recently announced Government taskforce charged with the social, economic and physical regeneration of the North East Inner City."
