Digital History Project 1917

This project involved a series of workshops for teenagers who were asked to create story set in Dublin in 1917 using modern technologies and the historical resources of Dublin City Library & Archive. Participants learnt how to research their story and develop illustrations and digital skills to animate their characters. The workshops explored a range of story ideas based on events during and around 1916-1922. Participants were asked to imagine being present in Dublin during that time and to look at the historical events from the perspective of a witness.

The Central Library in partnership with the Community & Education Department of the Abbey Theatre, presented Me, Mollser a specially commissioned monologue play which introduced The Plough and the Stars by Sean O’Casey to a younger audience. Me, Mollser by Ali White, is a compelling, funny and poignant monologue based on the character of Mollser, a fifteen year old consumptive who appears in The Plough and the Stars. Aimed at ages 10+ (5th and 6th class pupils), the play introduces children to a strong willed and passionate young woman coping with consumption against the backdrop of the 1913 Lock-Out and the Easter Rising. In association with the Department of Education and Skills.

My Area in 1916

My Area 1916, was an exciting project that brought history “off the page” for teenage students in Dublin’s North inner city. Transition Year students in six secondary schools worked with historian Donal Fallon to research their area in 1916 and to see what the social and economic conditions were like for people who lived in the environs of their school 100 years ago. The students produced a publication and cascaded their learning into their local communities. Donal Fallon has extensive knowledge of the hidden histories of inner city Dublin and is wellknown for his Come Here to Me blog.

Sources for 1916: Schools Resource Pack

Dublin City Libraries and Archives have produced a schools pack of Sources for 1916. This pack is intended for students to use during a school tour of their local library. It is divided into two sections, one for Primary Level students and one for Secondary students. The pack uses items from the rich collection of primary sources held in Dublin City Library and Archive and it will help students understand the events of 1916. The documents are facsimile versions of these sources, and have been selected with a view to making the experience of discovering the history of 1916 immediate and meaningful. The Pack includes pages from the Thom's Street Directory of 1916, showing the make-up of communities in the different areas of Dublin, photographs of how the Rising impacted on ordinary children, and facsimile newspapers of the time. We hope that teachers will find it a useful part of their pupils’ experience of visiting their library.

Your Ireland: Libraries and Post Primary Schools 1916 Poetry Competition

Post primary students were invited to write a poem on the wide-ranging topic ‘Your Ireland’ with competitions taking place at county and national levels. Eight national finalists were selected and the national final took place on 6 May 2016 at Dublin Castle. Róisín Finnegan, the Dublin finalist won the overall competition with her poem The Golden Years of the Emerald Isle.

This competition was a partnership between the Department of Education and Skills, Local Authority Library Services and Libraries Development, Local Government Management Agency.

Artistic Projects

Dublin City Arts Office, axis Arts Centre, the National Association for Youth Drama (NAYD) and City of Dublin Youth Services Board worked together in partnership to support young artists to develop original artistic projects and welcome their artistic voice and participation in 1916/2016 Centenary Programme.

  • St Andrews Resource Centre/ Talk About Youth Project- Pearse Street - ‘Letters in Motion’ developed a youth led street arts performance in visual arts, dance, drama exploring local history and eyewitness accounts of the 1916 rebellion in the Pearse Street area.
  • D.I.T. Ballymun Music Programme- ‘A Tri-Coloured Ribbon’ a professional composer and young musicians created a 10 minute musical score and film using songs from the 1916 era as a stimulus for an original composition and performance.
  • Brú Youth Service Crumlin- ‘Rising Reflections’ - a youth led digital media and photography project involving 20 young people documenting their reflections of 1916 and its impact on their lives today.
  • Dublin Youth Theatre, Dublin 1- young members undertook a three day intensive workshop with Dr Helena Enright, of the University of Bath exploring the role of young people in the 1916 Rising using verbatim theatre and theatre of testimony.
  • Coiscéim Broadreach, Dublin 1- a collaborative dance/film project ‘Where are we now?’ in Dublin’s north inner city for a group of up to 30 young people.

Project 20/20

October 2015 - March 2016

As part of the 1916/2016 Commemoration Programme, Dublin City Arts Office and The LAB Gallery, worked with children from the Central Model Primary School, Dublin 1. The children looked at an original copy of the 1916 Proclamation, Irish history, and the city itself using Visual Thinking Strategies – a slow looking process developed by The Museum of Modern Art in which children lead the agenda. The children worked with the Preservation and Conservation Department of the Library of Trinity College, Lynn McGrane, professional artists and The LAB Gallery and created work about their experience. Project 20/20 is a Visual Literacy Initiative with children living in Dublin 1 that focuses on unlocking children’s voices as citizens - what they tell us about their lives, connections with others (family, teachers, community), how they learn and develop - by integrating visual arts practice into local childcare and primary schools.
