Michael Grant Education Series: 2019 Anniversaries

2019 AnniversariesThursday 7 February 2019 at 1pm, Thursday 14 February at 1pm and Thursday 21 February at 1pm at the Music Library, Central Library, Ilac Centre.

Michael Grant in his first series of talks for 2019 will look at the lives, loves and the careers of another group of important composers who have anniversaries in 2019.

Thursday 7th February @ 1p.m:  2019 marks the 150th anniversary of the death of the French composer Hector Berlioz on 3rd March 1869.  In this talk Michael will discuss Berlioz, an incurable romantic who never learned the piano and whose romanticism is evident in the dramatic accounts in his Memoirs of his passionate love affairs and of his adoration of great romantic literature.

Thursday 14th February @ 1p.m: Two of the great composers of operetta were born two hundred years ago in 1819.  In this talk Michael will discuss the lives, loves and music of the Austrian Franz Von Suppe who was born on 18th April 1819 and the German/ Jewish/French/Catholic Jacques Offenbach who wrote nearly 100 operettas and his uncompleted opera “The Tales of Hoffmann”.

Thursday 21st February @ 1p.m: The great virtuoso pianist, composer and wife of Robert Schumann, Clara Wieck Schumann was born 200 years ago on 13th September 1819.  In the final talk of this series Michael will look at her extraordinary life as child prodigy, international concert pianist, composer and wife and widow of Robert Schumann.  He will also touch on her relationship with Johannes Brahms.
