World Design Capital is a biennial designation awarded on foot of a competition held by The International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) www.worlddesigncapital.com

The inaugural WDC was Turin in 2008, Seoul is this year’s capital and Helsinki will be WDC in 2012. The winning city hosts a programme of events over the course of the year. The award is not a ‘status’ designator but a recognition of innovative cities that have most effectively and creatively used design as a tool for social, cultural and economic progress.

Cities that value and apply good design in the way they think, plan and act are better cities. The aim of Pivot Dublin is to make a compelling bid for World Design Capital 2014 and through the bid process develop projects which will create lasting changes designed to benefit the city.

Dublin is one of three cities to be shortlisted for designation as World Design Capital 2014. The bid has been prepared as a joint venture between the four local authorities of the greater Dublin area: Dublin City Council, Fingal County Council, South Dublin County Council and Dún Laoghaire – Rathdown County Council. It is led and coordinated by City Architect’s Division, Dublin City Council.
