The aim of housing regeneration projects is to build sustainable communities through a combination of the following initiatives:
- educational, arts & culture and estate management
We aim to rejuvenate the built environment by:
- the demolition of old and the construction of the new high quality and sustainable homes
- taking urban design guidelines into account
In Dublin City Council the Project Management Unit is responsible for delivering major housing regeneration projects through Public Private Partnerships. A Public Private Partnership (PPP) is a partnership between the public and private sector for the purpose of delivering a project or service, which was traditionally provided by the public sector. Through partnership, the public and private sector aims to provide quality public infrastructure in the most economically efficient manner.
Overall Dublin City Council aims to provide through Public Private Partnerships:
- 2,788 new social units
- 2,681 affordable units

Dublin City Council proposes to provide €8.5 million from its annual capital allocation in 2009 to make an immediate start on the regeneration of St Michael’s Estate, O’Devaney Gardens and Dominick Street. The projects are no longer viable under the Public Private Partnership process that had been envisaged and Dublin City Council wants to address the immediate needs of its existing tenants as well as those on the city’s housing list.
The program will deliver approx. 220 social and 200 affordable dwellings. The program also includes extensive community buildings together with enhanced public open space. The inclusion of commercial outlets and private housing over the next 10 years will ensure sustainable mixed use communities that will transform the present sites and be of huge benefit to the surrounding areas.
Fatima Mansions Regeneration Project, Dublin 8
Description of project area
The Fatima Mansions housing complex is located in the south inner city. The value of the project is €200 million.
Progress so far
The project commenced with the demolition of all existing flat blocks on the site and their replacement with over 600 units that include a mixture of social, affordable and private housing along with community, commercial, retail and leisure facilities. Phase 1 of the development is completed. The final phase of this development is progressing and is due to be completed in 2009.
