Dublin City Council has completed the tender process for the introduction of a free WiFi service, which will provide free internet access at key destinations within Dublin City. The successful service provider is Gowex, a Spanish company that has provided similar quality services throughout Europe. The contract with Gowex was signed on 19th October 2012, and an implementation programme is being finalised.

The City Council has identified the following areas within the city for the Wi-Fi service provision.

  • Smithfield Square
  • Barnardo’s Square
  • Clarendon Street
  • St. Patrick’s Park
  • O’Connell Street Plaza / GPO
  • Temple Bar Square
  • Wolfe Tone Square
  • Frontage to the Convention Centre Dublin
  • Merrion Square
  • Henry Street
  • Grafton Street
  • Outdoor amphitheatre located at Civic Offices.

Gowex as part of their tender submission will provide a free Wi-Fi service in additional locations throughout the city.

The introduction of this service will strengthen Dublin City’s reputation as a forward thinking and digitally inclusive city, which strongly promotes access to on-line services and information in the City. The initiative is being project managed by the City Council’s Economic Development Unit, with liaison across relevant departments within the City Council.

The Dublin City Council Wi-Fi project is focussed on making internet access much more freely available to both the citizens of Dublin City and its visitors.
The key aims of the City Council’s WiFi project are to:

  • Provide free public access to internet services at key destinations in the city centre.
  • Promote Dublin as a forward-thinking and digitally inclusive city.
  • Introduce WiFi as an aid to foster economic growth, making Dublin city centre a more attractive destination for citizens, business and visitors.
  • Encourage increased diversity and vitality within public open spaces and streets, which will serve to complement public realm enhancement schemes.
  • Increase public access to on-line services and information.
