Apply for planning permission for a new development

You need to apply for planning permission from Dublin City Council before you start any development work in the city. This includes:

  • Constructing a new building or other structure, e.g. house, factory, monument, playground, etc.

  • Changing an existing building or property, e.g. an extension, a few floor, etc.

  • Changing the way in which a property is used, e.g. to change a house into a workshop.

Note: Some developments do not need planning permission. These are called "exempt developments". Contact us at the address below to find out if your development is exempt.

NOTE: Christmas Period Site Notice

Please note that site notices must be left up for an additional  9 day period after Christmas to comply with section 251(1) of the 2000 planning act .
(The period between 24th Dec and the 1st Jan both days inclusive shall be disregarded when calculating any appropriate period or other time limit)

Submit your application for planning permission

Step 3: Return the application form to us

Send your application form to the address below.

Please also include:

  • All information and documents as explained in the instructions document (above).

  • The planning fee you need to pay us. Find out what charges you need to pay.

Template for a physical site notice

Use the following template when placing a site notice at the location to which your application refers:

Wording for newspaper notices

Use the following wording when placing a planning notice in a newspaper:

"The planning application may be inspected, or purchased at a fee not exceeding the reasonable cost of making a copy, at the offices of Dublin City Council during its public opening hours and a submission or observation in relation to the application may be made to the authority in writing on payment of the prescribed fee within the period of 5 weeks beginning on the date of receipt by the authority of the application."

It should be further noted that if your planning application is in an approved Strategic Development Zone, Public Notices and Site Notices must indicate that the application relates to development in the SDZ. The following wording is suggested: “This application relates to a proposed development within the North Lotts & Grand Canal Dock SDZ Planning Scheme area".
