On your marks get set .... go! St. Patrick's 5k Festival Race

Don’t miss a great day out in Dublin city this St. Patricks Festival weekend!  One of the highlights of this annual festival is the St. Patrick’s 5K Festival Road Race which takes place on Sunday, 16th March, 2014 at 12 noon.

Lord Mayor Oisín Quinn and Race Director Eamonn Coghlan will start the race at the corner of Dawson Street and St. Stephen’s Green. 100 motorbikes will help kick off the big 5K with a roar of engines as the race gets underway. 

Open to families, fun runners and dedicated athletes alike, this race has established itself as a major attraction in encouraging locals and visitors to the city to join in the Festival’s atmosphere. An estimated 2,000 competitors are due to take part.  Register on line at www.athleticsireland.ie

Not only is the Lord Mayor starting the race he will also be competing in it along with almost 200 people who joined his Lord Mayor’s 5 Alive Challenge this year. The team in their distinctive blue tops, is now taking on their 4th official race this year in a bid to stay fit and healthy.

The St. Patrick’s 5k Festival Road Race is delivered by Dublin City Council in partnership with Metropolitan Harriers and St. Brigid’s AC  and Kleinwort Benson Investors.  Refreshments for participants of the race will be available in the Mansion House after the race and will follow with prize giving by the Lord Mayor in the Round Room.

With music, face painting, goodie bags, t-shirts etc. the St. Patrick’s 5k Festival Road Race not only caters for family fun but for the serious runner alike.

Notes to the Editor:

Prior to the main race, the staff of Beaumont Hospital including doctors, nurses, porters, physio therapists, consultants and neurosurgeons and will run for their lives in a Charity Relay Race in aid of The Beaumont Charity Foundation at 11.40a.m.

Adding also to the race’s festival atmosphere will be entertainment and street theatre including a live band, clowns, jugglers, face painters, balloon artists, stilt walkers, fire eaters and a parade of motorbikes. An added dimension this year will be the presence of Disney characters from the latest Muppets movie! 

The Headquarters for the Race is at Fire Restaurant adjacent to the Mansion House.
