Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane

Irish artist Eva Rothschild’s first solo museum exhibition, dealing with the concept of sculpture, opens at the Dublin City Gallery the Hugh Lane on Friday, 23rd May 2014 and will run until Sunday, 21st September 2014.

Councillor Mary O’Shea will launch the exhibition at a reception at the Gallery on Thursday 22nd May at 6.30pm on behalf of the Lord Mayor.

Born in Dublin and now living in London, Rothschild is a very interesting artist who is arousing considerable interest internationally. Her works are tension-filled combinations of varied materials such as steel, concrete, jesmonite, fibreglass and Plexiglas. By cutting off their connection to the world of function and application, Rothschild creates open-ended artworks that encourage the viewer to think about how we experience objects in the world.

“Rothschild manages to deliver sensation, memory and insight through the transformation of materials into strange and unfamiliar objects” said Michael Dempsey, Head of Exhibitions at Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane.

The artist has also made a series of photographic portraits of people holding snakes in galleries in different cities around the world.  In preparation for her Dublin exhibition Rothschild photographed locals and visitors at the Hugh Lane gallery last February. A selection of these photographs features in the Dublin exhibition.

An outdoor sculpture created by Eva Rothschild is currently featuring at Vestibule, a festival of contemporary art at Merrion Square, Dublin. She is also currently participating in the Biennale of Sydney 2014 and has also exhibited at Tate Britain, London among many other international galleries.

This exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue. The exhibition is curated by Michael Dempsey, Head of Exhibitions, Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane.
