Descriptive List: Archives of the Dublin Staple, 1596 - 1678

Staple Books 1- 3

Registers recording entry of bonds of the staple (called 'Statute staple') entered in the presence of the mayor and constable of the Dublin staple. Entries record the amount of the bond and the name, social standing, townland and county of the debtor and creditor. With annotations recording: later cancellation of bonds; declaration of satisfaction received in respect of bonds; and registration of bonds of chancery

  • list of men who traded in the staple, as first taken in 1554
  • list of men who traded in the staple without being free of it (no date)
  • copy of precedent for indictments, set down by Sir Richard Bolton, Lord Chief Baron (no date)
  • goods entered before the mayor and constables of the staple, 1630-37

Staple Book 3

Register of statute staple, as above. Note that the majority of statutes entered in this register are followed by a defeasance setting out conditions under which the statute staple would be made void or remain in force.

With inserts including: original letters of acknowledgement of satisfaction received for statute staple (5 items, 1676-92); and list of prisoners and traversers (22 March 1715)

Forward to this volume includes: oath taken by mayor and constables of the staple; and oath taken by brother of the staple (no date)

Appendix to this volume includes:

  • admission of brethren of the staple, 1664-8
  • list of those aldermen and sheriffs peers who were brethren of the staple, 1669, giving dates of admission and including
  • subsequent notices of death among them
  • list of brethren of the staple, 1669-74, giving dates of admission and including subsequent notices of deaths among them

Staple Book 4

Minute Book. Minutes of the annual meeting of the mayor, constables and brethren of the staple, held each year in January for the election of the mayor and constables for the forthcoming year. Contains beseeches heard at this meeting, from merchants applying for admission as brethren, having been free of their guild for three years. Includes text of oath of allegiance and oath abjuring popery.

Notes

  1. In this period, the mayor of the staple was appointed by the Dublin City Assembly as one of the three keepers of the city treasury's keys. The above list is taken from records of these appointments which appear in Calendar of Ancient Records of Dublin I pp 395-7, 400, 402-3, 405, 408-09, 411, 423, 426, 429, 433, 437
  2. Walter FitzSimon was appointed a keeper of the city treasury's keys for 1534-5 but is not recorded as mayor of the staple. No appointment is recorded for 1535-6.
  3. The appointment of officials by the City Assembly is not recorded for 1543-45. From 1546-49 inclusive, the mayor of the staple is recorded as a keeper of the city treasury's keys, but individual office-holders are not named.
  4. The outgoing Mayor of Dublin served successively as master of trinity guild and mayor of the staple.
