Dixon Slide Collection

Street traders on Cole's Lane, 1913The library holds a collection of approximately 1,600 slides, mainly of Dublin city and surroundings, collected by historian, F.E. Dixon. It contains a wide range of historical pictures e.g.

  • Colour photographs from the 1960s and 1970s taken by Dixon e.g. of public buildings, bridges, events, streets, squares and shops
  • Photographs of old postcards with Dublin motifs
  • Old photographs of Dublin and events in the city, e.g. Royal visits or funeral processions
  • Old engravings/prints of buildings and shops
  • Advertisements and letter heads with text and often pictures of shops, factories and businesses
  • Photographs of maps and similar, e.g. from Shaw’s Directory (1850) and Rocque's Map of Dublin.

Miscellaneous Slides

Cartouche, John Rocque map, 1794Various collections of slides include views of Dublin, Ranelagh, Rathmines and Harold’s Cross, Transport images, Scenery of Ireland, Tipperary, Wicklow and Kilkenny views, Taylor & Skinner maps, Book bindings, the 18th Century Festa Italiana and images of the animals of Dublin Zoo.


Photographic collections include aerial photographs of Dublin from the 1950s and the 1960s, photographs of Dublin buildings from the archive of Battersby and Co., Estate Agents, of the Bridges of Dublin by Chancellor and other photographers, the Aloysius Kane Collection of Photographs of Dublin from the 1930s to 1970s and the photographs from the Irish Tourist Association Survey of Dublin, carried out in the early 1940s.

Search and browse the Dublin City Photographic Collection online. This collection is an amalgam of photographs taken by City Council employees in the course of their work, including everything from civic events to street-cleaning. The bulk of the material dates from the 1980s and 1990s.

Postcards and Engravings

The library holdings include postcards of Dublin and Irish interest e.g. a set of coloured cards of the Royal Hospital, Kilmainham from the early 1900s, a Leporello Album set of Dublin Views, and various examples of Valentine's, Lawrence, Dollard and Hinde postcards of the 20th century. Loose-leaf engravings of the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries of Irish and Dublin views and buildings are collated into one collection. Engravings from the three volume ‘Narrative of a residence in Ireland during the summer of 1814, and that of 1815’ by Anne Plumptre, published in 1817, as well as from the 'Dublin Penny Journal' are also listed in this collection.

Videos, DVDs, CDs and Audio Cassettes

Audiovisual material collected in the library concentrates on the oral tradition. Local history, community films and interviews, plays, lectures and poetry readings are held in these formats. There is a facility to watch or listen to any of our audiovisual material in the library.
