The Gilbert Lecture Series was inaugurated in 1998, the year which marked the centenary of the death of Sir John T. Gilbert. The aim of the series is to celebrate the life and work of Gilbert, and the history of Dublin, the city whose past he wished to uncover and bring before a wider public. The first ten lectures, delivered from 1998 to 2007 inclusive, are now published as a single volume. The series continues and each new lecture is published individually.

“The Sir John T. Gilbert Lecture series was initiated in 1998 both to commemorate and to build on the work of one of Dublin's most eminent bibliophiles and historians. A primary objective was to encourage interest in the history of Dublin and to make that history accessible to new audiences. Over a decade, ten eminent speakers have brought to life the Dublin of our ancestors, raising new questions in our minds about the city in which we live. Each has offered a personal insight into the historical, architectural and indeed, cultural and social fabric which has shaped the lives of those Dubliners who form either the primary focus of discussion or analysis, or, who act as shadows to the evolving physical fabric of city development. We are indebted to those speakers whose scholarly research and analysis casts new light on the stones of Dublin alleyways and buildings, on its people, its culture, and on the early visitors who sailed up the river, pausing to reflect on the setting as a place in which to build a future, and paving the way to a Dublin whose people can consider and value the evolving story of a great city.”
