The Wide Street Commission was established in 1757, and was Ireland’s first planning authority. Over its 94-year existence, it had a major impact on the development of Georgian Dublin. The records of Wide Street Commission are preserved by Dublin City Archives, and include over 900 manuscript maps of Dublin dating from 17th to 19th century, which are subject to an ongoing conservation project. The maps were conserved with part funding from the Heritage Council under the Heritage Management Grant Scheme. To celebrate this, Maeve Casserly, Dublin City Council Historian-in-Residence hosts two events:
Monday 21 August from 6pm to 7pm - A guided tour around the City Centre exploring the work and legacy of the Wide Streets Commission. Meeting point: Main entrance of Dublin City Hall. Apologies this event is now fully booked.
Tuesday 22 August from 6pm to 7pm - A workshop exploring the maps of the Wide Streets Commission. Location: Dublin City Library and Archive, Pearse Street. In this workshop you'll see how the city architects reshaped the medieval city through their maps and sketches.
